Our flight was great, and getting through customs, out of the airport, and to our hotel via taxi was great! We landed at 7:10 and were checking in to our hotel by 8:40!
We have two rooms on the 2nd floor of the Hotel Aventino. The rooms are small but very pretty and clean, with wood floors, long drapes, and tiled bathrooms. The kids are sleeping a room with a king bed and we are across the hall in a slightly smaller room with a queen bed. The air conditioning is glorious.
Since is was still early and we'd been sitting for awhile, we decided to go for a walk. It was a great night for it, because there was a huge concert going on in the Circus Maximus and all the surrounding streets were closed to cars - so very pedestrian friendly tonight! We walked a few minutes to the Giardino degli Aranci (Orange Garden), which had a great view of the city and gave us our first use of the flowing fountains you can find all over Rome.
Next we walked along the Circus Maximus (It was closed off due to the concert, but you could walk around it) and to the Colosseum. We had heard it was neat to see at night and we weren't sure if we'd have the opportunity, so this worked well! We took another route back to our hotel around the other side of the Circus Maximus.
This part of Rome was crazy. I don't even know what all we saw, because it was dark and we were just kind of wandering - but we saw stuff every where we went - fountains, columns, statues, ruins... everywhere you looked there was something to see.
We are visiting the same area tomorrow in more detail - with tickets to go into the Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine hill.
