July 17 and July 18 - Salzburg and Travel to Rome

July 17 - Today was our last day in Salzburg. Today, the rain caught up to us! We started our day at the Farmer's Market, which is a tradition that dates back to 1908. We got some bread, pastries, fruit, and cheese. It rained off and on throughout our visit to the market, and we realized just how incredibly lucky we were to have such beautiful weather on our first day when we did the bike tour.

We took our picnic back to Mirabelle Gardens and found the driest spot we could on a wall. After we ate, we visited the rest of the gardens, including the dwarf garden which we had missed.

Next, we went to the terrace in front of the Museum of Modern Art to check out views from the other side of Salzburg, where a few other scenes from The Sound of Music were filmed.

We wanted to rent bikes again, but the bike shop was closed due to the rain. So we took the bus out to Hellbrun Palace and walked around the free garden area, up to a look our over the city, and to a stone theater that dated back to the 1600s.

We went back to the hotel for the afternoon - feeling tired and soggy - and spent some time resting and packing.

For dinner, we went to a Mozart Dinner Concert at St. Michael's. The show was fantastic. It was a quintet and two opera singers performing a suite of Mozart songs. It was well paced - they performed for about 20 minutes, then we had our soup course. They performed again, and we had our entree, followed by a final performance and out dessert. It was a fun way to end our time in Austria.

On July 18, we said Auf wiedetsehn to Salzburg and Bonjour to France. We took a train from Salzburg and switched to the TGV in Zurich, Switzerland.

We are checked in to our Marriott, and Angie is coming soon. As soon as she is checked in we will try to figure out dinner at 10:00 PM!
